Illegal Crab Snares

NON-COMPLIANT CRAB TRAPS BEING SOLD IN BRITISH COLUMBIA.

Vancouver -- Fisheries and Oceans Canada is advising the public and recreational fishing retailers that some crab traps being sold in British Columbia are not in compliance with the British Columbia Sport Fishing
Regulations (1996).

A crab trap that uses wire loops to catch crabs by the legs may be available for sale from some recreational fishing retailers. This particular crab trap is illegal in British Columbia. Under the sport fishing regulations, it is prohibited to catch or attempt to catch fish (including crab) with snares.

The penalty for fishing with prohibited gear (section 38 BCSFR) is $150.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada is asking the public to ensure that their crab trap/s meet Canadian regulations.  Check with your local tackle shop or recreational fishing store for more information or to ensure that your trap/s is legal.

It is the responsibility of all recreational harvesters to
know the rules and current regulations, including minimum size limits and
daily limits.
