However, as with shopping offline it can also be costly and risky from a financial point of view. To avoid being a victim of internet fraud there are certain steps that you can take to protect yourself. Here are a few suggestions that may be helpful: 1) Never deal with a company that uses a box number for an address. 2) Before you purchase any products (particularly high ticket products) from a website. Contact the principle owners of the company. Make sure you have ALL their contact information. Ask how long they have been in business. Ask for the phone number of the town or municipal office that issued their license. Phone the licensing office and ask how long the company has been in business. Ask for the name of their ISP (Internet Service Provider) Ask for referrals of people who have purchased from them, and follow up with them. 3) Never give out any information to anyone until you are satisfied that they are who they claim to be, they are a legally established company, they have been around for what you deem to be a reasonable period of time, you have all of their contact information, and the information that you send is not going to be compromised, or possibly intercepted by a third party, and you are confident that the recipient is going to respect your confidentiality. 4) Wherever possible use a purchasing method like PayPal, or Verisign etc. When you use one of these types of service usually there is no fee to you. Also the person or company you are purchasing from does not get access to your credit card information, which offers a reasonable degree of protection. There are many such services on the internet check out sites like Ebay and see what they are using. Remember at the end of the day there are no guarantees in life. Caution is the watchword and the old adage is as true on the internet as in everyday life 'If it sounds to good to be true, then the chances are overwhelmingly in favor that it is' Terry: Hand © ® Click the home
